We Need Your Help – House Bill 714
We wanted to make you aware of the North Carolina Behavior Analyst Licensure Bill (House Bill 714).
Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and BCBA-Ds are graduate level practitioners (at the Masters and Doctoral levels respectively) who passed an examination in addition to their coursework in order to obtain their credentials. These criteria in all other 49 states allow BCBAs to practice independently. Solely in the state of North Carolina, BCBAs are required to be supervised by a Licensed Psychologist (LP) or Licensed Psychology Associate (LPA).
There is a finite number of LPs and LPAs who are available to supervise BCBAs in North Carolina, which puts a cap on the number of families that are able to served. While the Autism Mandate is now law and will open up ABA services to be available to many more families on July 1st of this year, these families that have been waiting for services may have to wait longer until a BCBA who is supervised by an LP or LPA with a background in ABA is available. House Bill 714 removes this barrier to obtaining ABA services as BCBAs would be able to practice independently.
For your convenience, we have attached a form letter below that can be sent directly out to your senator and/or representative, along with other activities to do if you would like to be involved. Please note that your response to this initiative will not in any way impact the delivery of services.
If you would like more information or have questions about the bill you can contact Selene Johnson via email: Selene.Johnson@ABCofNC.org
